For a good night’s sleep, tuck into luxurious, comfortable bed linen

Invest in good bed linen to generate a sense of well-being, warmth and good vibes at home

“Oh bed! Oh bed! Delicious bed: That heaven upon earth to the weary head.” – This was an articulation on what beds mean by English poet, author and humorist Thomas Hood.

The value of good quality bed and bedding is best realized when you move away from the comfort of home. Says 18-year-old Mayank, who he recently shifted from home to hostel at his engineering college in Jaipur- “When I moved bags and baggage to my hostel, I realized the importance of a good bed. Back home, mom used to change the bed linen every now and then and I used to keep complaining that she has this OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) for cleanliness. But now I miss everything about home, especially my comfortable bedroom.”

Beyond hygiene, the bed and bedding induces a feel good factor for house and house mates- perhaps that is why people call it home sweet home. So what does good quality bedding exactly imply? Says 23-year-old wellness expert Anjali Kakkar- “I am very particular about my bed- starting from the mattress and going up: memory foam mattress topper, waterproof protector, fitted cotton sheet, duvet with cotton cover, and a blanket if it’s really cold. Also two pillows with cases matching the duvet cover, and finally a teddy bear.”

Good feel and good appeal are two intangibles that an ideal bed and bedding should induce in inhabitants and onlookers. Today there is a growing preference for eco-friendly bedding options, including organic cotton, bamboo, and linen. These materials are not only sustainable but also offer excellent breathability and comfort. Dohars that are lightweight, pillows with memory foam, cooling technology, ergonomic designs, microfibre cotton for cloud like feel are preferred. Bedding with integrated technology, such as cooling pillows and temperature-regulating comforters, is gaining traction. These innovations aim to enhance sleep quality.

“Good quality bedding, particularly in the luxury residential space, is defined by a combination of exquisite craftsmanship, premium materials, and attention to detail,” says Neha Gupta Bector, Chairperson, myTrident, a premium home furnishing brand- “At myTrident, we believe that luxury bedding should offer not only comfort but also an experience that elevates the ambiance of a home. This means using high-thread-count cotton, sustainable and breathable fabrics, and designs that reflect timeless elegance. The touch and feel of the fabric, durability, and how it complements the overall decor are all critical factors in ensuring that our customers experience true luxury.”

Material is everything. Plastic and polyester sheets make you sweat and the material holds the smell more than cotton or wool or bamboo. Says Rajat Bharedwaj, a 37 year old Mumbai based headhunter – “I’ve learned over the years that there are a few key things that I would actually pay obscene amounts of money for because they allow me to sleep wonderfully well…..and those are certain types of sheets, certain types of quilts, and a long lasting pillow.”

Bedroom Basics: What You Should Know

What is the best way to dress up a bedroom … what should be the first thing that one buys- the rugs, the curtains? And how should one proceed to decorate the room?

Decorating a bedroom is a personal journey that begins with envisioning a style, which can be inspired by online sources or magazines. According to Rajjeshh Verma, Director, Architronix Pvt. Ltd, a Gurugram based architectural firm, “Choose a style or theme that resonates with you, such as modern, bohemian, minimalist, or traditional. Based on this style, finalize a colour palette for paint, textiles, and accessories. Start by selecting major furniture pieces, then decide on the flooring type—whether hard flooring or carpet—and choose a rug accordingly. Focus next on wall finishes, such as paint, wallpaper, or panelling. Add art pieces and décor to the walls, followed by curtains or blinds and complementary bedding. Incorporate lighting—whether overhead, bedside lamps, or floor lamps—to create a dramatic effect. Finally, add accessories to infuse your personal touch into the overall design.”

Avoid mistakes such as overcrowding, neglecting lighting, prioritizing style over comfort, ignoring storage, disregarding proportions, and neglecting personalization. To ensure a smooth process, create a mood board, invest in quality pieces, layer textures, plan for functionality, and maintain colour balance. Avoid rushing, over-matching, neglecting comfort testing, ignoring window treatments, and cluttering the space. While colour and theme coordination are important, flexibility is crucial.

What’s Trending

Bedsheets are a must for every home. “I was pleasantly surprised to know that our bed sheets feature amongst the most ordered items at the 10 minute BlinkIt inventory of items, says Rajneesh Bhatia, CEO, myTrident, “I thought the ten minute items were restricted to groceries but this datapoint was revealing of the customer’s psyche.”

The luxury bedding space has three main differentiators nowadays over the rest – design, fabric, aroma. The anti odour or aromatic bedsheets are becoming popular in many homes.

While buying a bedsheet, you should be aware of the thread count. Sheets with a high thread count (400 and above) are highly sought after for their softness and durability. According to Tushar Joshi, Principal Designer, Utkarsh Vastukaran- a Mumbai based interior design firm- “In HNI homes, there is a strong preference for high thread count sheets, especially Egyptian cotton and sateen weaves. Silk and satin are also gaining popularity for their luxurious feel. HNIs in India are increasingly opting for bespoke bedding, with a focus on personalized monogramming and hand-embroidered details. Dohars and comforters with natural fillings like goose down are preferred for their softness and comfort, while cushions and pillows are often chosen for both aesthetic appeal and ergonomic support.” He shares that in design, vintage and retro styles are making a comeback, particularly with classic prints, muted color palettes, and intricate detailing reminiscent of the past. Floral patterns, paisleys, and Art Deco-inspired designs are currently trending, along with a renewed interest in traditional Indian motifs blended with contemporary aesthetics.

The other trend is designer sets. For instance, myTrident has recently collaborated with designer duo, Shivan & Narresh, for a luxury bedding collection with bold patterns and vibrant colors, reflecting the designer duo’s signature style. The collection includes bedsheets and cushion covers, with prices ranging from ₹3,000 to ₹12,000.

Says Neha Gupta Bector, Chairperson, myTrident, “In the luxury bedding space, we’ve seen a growing trend towards customers seeking bedding that offers the look and feel of art. This is reflected in our careful experimentation with colour palettes and our use of subtle, yet sophisticated textures like jacquard weaves and embroidered details. Additionally, there’s a strong preference embracing designs that focus on texture. Our latest collections have also embraced the trend of layering—using a mix of textures, such as combining a quilted bedspread with a lightweight dohar and accent pillows, to create a luxurious, layered look that adds depth and comfort to the bedroom.”
